Genetics – the study of heredity
- Define the term heredity
- Define the term gene
- Outline the role of a gene
- Define the term gene expression
- Know the structure of a chromosome
Heredity is the passing on of features from parents to offspring by means of genes
Also called Genetic Inheritance
ž A gene is the unit of hereditary information
ž It is composed of a section of DNA which acts as a chemical instruction for protein synthesis.
ž Each gene determines the synthesis of a particular protein.
ž Each gene occupies a specific position on a chromosome called a locus.

Conversion of the information encoded in a gene first into messenger RNA and then to a protein
Chromosomes contain a number of genes
Chromosomes are made up of
60% protein
40% DNA
Genes are arranged along the DNA of the chromosome
Chromosomes are:
Thread like structures
Contains DNA
Contains Protein
Contains Genetic Information
Occur in pairs
Found in the nucleus of all cells
